Joseph Mangano’s book Radioactive Baby Teeth: The Cancer Link describes past and current studies measuring amounts of Strontium-90 in baby teeth, and how this radioactive chemical raises the risk of childhood cancer.

The book reads like a mystery, beginning with the discovery of an old ammunition bunker where thousands of baby teeth from the 1950s are stored. It is an easy-to-read account of one of the most crucial science and health issues of the 20th century.

Christie Brinkley discusses RPHP in the cover story of the June 2010 Ladies Home Journal
As an activist concerned about the dangers of nuclear power plants, she can knowledgeably cite facts and figures about the issue.

"Christie cares, but it's more than that," says Joseph Mangano, the executive director of the Radiation and Public Health Project, of which Brinkley is a board member."The issues we deal with are very sophisticated. Christie is very fluent in discussing Strontium 90 and children's cancer rates." Even with the stresses of recent years, she has remained committed to that cause and pragmatic about using her celebrity to gain media attention. "I know when I go someplace that they're going to want to find out about what I'm wearing instead of what I'm saying," Brinkley says. "But to be able to get something about a nuclear power plant on Extra or Access Hollywood is incredible."

RPHP Finds Early Evidence of Link Between Japan Fallout and U.S. Infant Death Risk

RPHP members Joseph Mangano and Janette Sherman have published a report with preliminary information showing rising infant deaths in areas hardest hit by Japanese fallout.  Using CDC data, the researchers found a 35% rise in the Pacific Northwest and a 48% rise in Philadelphia.

RPHP analyzed official EPA data on Japan radiation that drifted to the U.S., and found it is 20 times above normal in the air and precipitation.  Levels in Idaho are about 100 times above normal.  This suggests that Americans born later in 2011 will have higher rates of infant deaths, low weight births, cancer, and other conditions, which is what occurred after the Chernobyl plume drifted over the U.S. in 1986.

20,000 Excess Cancer Cases in 15 Years Near Indian Point: New Report Suggests Radiation Exposure May Be One Cause
Joseph J. Mangano MPH MBA
Radiation and Public Health Project
November 18, 2010
Cancer incidence rates in the four counties closest to the Indian Point nuclear plant have risen much more rapidly than U.S. rates since the early 1990s, according to a report released today. If trends in local rates had equaled U.S. trends, over 20,000 fewer local residents would have been diagnosed with the disease.

RPHP Releases Journal Article Showing Thyroid Cancer Rates Near Indian Point Nuclear Reactors Are Among the Highest in the U.S.
On November 16th, 2009, RPHP held a press conference announcing its findings that the rate of thyroid cancer cases in counties closest to the Indian Point nuclear plant 35 miles north of midtown Manhattan are the highest in New York State, and among the highest in the U.S.
These findings are substantiated in detail in Mr. Mangano's article: Geographic Variation in U.S. Thyroid Cancer Incidence and a Cluster Near Nuclear Reactors in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania published in the International Journal of Health Services Volume 39, Number 4, 2009, pages 643 - 661.

Radioactive Fallout From Nuclear Testing and the Rise of Thyroid Cancer in the U.S.
Robert Alvarez
Institute for Policy Studies
Huffington Post,Thursday, October 14, 2010
According to a recent New York Times article, thyroid cancer in the U.S. has been on the rise for nearly 40 years. The long-standing explanation that this is due to better diagnostics is no longer accepted. This also means that the impacts of radioactive iodine fallout from nuclear weapons testing and Chernobyl cannot be so readily ruled out.

Cancer -- The Number One Killer -- And Its Environmental Causes
Karl Grossman
Huffington Post, Tuesday, August 17
The World Health Organization projects that this year cancer will become the world's leading cause of death. Why the epidemic of cancer?
The cause of the cancer epidemic, as numerous studies have now documented, is largely environmental -- the result of toxic substances in the water we drink, the food we eat, the consumer products we use, the air we breathe. But there are powerful interests that profit from pollution and stifle effective governmental regulation.

Chernobyl:The Gift That Never Stops Giving
Robert Alvarez
Institute for Policy Studies
Huffington Post, August 13, 2010
We are now finding that threats to human health and the environment from the radioactive fallout of Chernobyl will persist for a very long time. There is an exclusionary zone near the reactor, roughly the size of Rhode Island (1000 sq kilometers), with such high levels of contamination that people are not supposed to live there for centuries to come. There are also "hot spots" throughout Russia, Poland Greece, Germany, Italy, UK, France, and Scandinavia where contaminated livestock and other foodstuff continue to be removed from human consumption. Other examples of contamination abound. But true to form, governments with major nuclear programs or ambitions are silent and are encouraging the view that it's time we forget about Chernobyl.
